Remembering the NYPD Organized Crime Control Bureau — 2016–2026
Some insignia commemorate an anniversary. Others remember an era.
This latest Huntzman project does a little of both.
2026 marks ten years since the NYPD Organized Crime Control Bureau (OCCB) was disbanded in 2016, bringing to a close a chapter in New York City policing that stretched back decades.
To recognize that 10th anniversary, Huntzman Enterprises created a special OCCB Memorial Patch and Challenge Coin, honoring the bureau, its history, and the men and women who served within its various commands.
“A Bureau Too Hard for a City Too Soft”
The centerpiece of the set is a 4.5-inch 3D PVC patch with Velcro backing, built around the unmistakable OCCB identity but given a decidedly Huntzman treatment.
Three characters representing the bureau dominate the design against a New York City backdrop, surrounded by imagery reflecting the different worlds investigated by OCCB.
Across the center is a phrase that sums up the spirit of the design:
“A BUREAU TOO HARD FOR A CITY TOO SOFT.”
The years 2016–2026 mark the decade since the bureau's disbandment, while “IN MEMORY OF OCCB” makes the purpose of the piece clear.
It's bold, irreverent and just a little dark—which somehow seems appropriate for an OCCB memorial patch.
The OCCB Memorial Challenge Coin
Accompanying the patch is a substantial 2-inch OCCB Memorial Challenge Coin.
The front translates the artwork and attitude of the patch into an antique-metal design, incorporating the OCCB characters, New York skyline, commemorative dates and the same signature motto.
The reverse takes a more traditional approach and pays tribute to the bureau itself.
At its center is the Organized Crime Control Bureau insignia, surrounded by references to the commands and investigative areas that made up OCCB. The dates 1971–2016 recognize the bureau's history and years of service.
Together, the two sides were designed to combine the personality of the commemorative artwork with a more historical tribute to OCCB and its legacy.
Ten Years Later
Departments reorganize. Commands merge. Names disappear from organizational charts.
But for the people who served there—and for collectors preserving the history of law enforcement insignia—those names and symbols can carry meaning long after the command itself is gone.
This set was created with exactly that idea in mind:
Remember the bureau. Remember the history. Remember the people who wore the insignia.
