From the Design Desk: Kenosha Police ICAC Unit

Some patch designs are intended to commemorate an event. Some celebrate the history or personality of a particular unit.

Others represent a mission.

This latest project from the Huntzman Design Desk was created for the Kenosha Police Department in Wisconsin and its work involving Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC).

For this 4-inch-high fully embroidered patch, the challenge was to create an insignia that immediately communicated both the technological nature of these investigations and the fundamental purpose behind them: protecting children.

A Beacon in the Digital World

At the center of the design stands a lighthouse, its beam cutting through a dark background filled with streams of binary code.

The symbolism was intentional.

The digital background represents the online environment in which these investigations take place, while the lighthouse not only reflects some of the local history, but also serves as a symbol of guidance, vigilance and protection.

Standing within its beam is the silhouette of a child—the reason behind the mission.

ICAC UNIT

The KENOSHA POLICE identification occupies the traditional upper rocker, while ICAC UNIT anchors the design along the bottom.

A restrained palette of black, gray, white and red keeps the patch professional while allowing the lighthouse beam to provide the design's strongest visual accent.

The binary code in the background adds another layer of detail, while subtle network imagery reinforces the cyber-investigative theme without overwhelming the central artwork.

Designed for Embroidery

The finished patch measures 4 inches high and was produced using traditional embroidery.

That's an important consideration with artwork like this. Elements such as binary characters can become extremely small when translated from a computer screen into actual thread, so the design has to balance detail with what can realistically remain recognizable once embroidered.

The finished piece maintains that digital character while still presenting the bold, clearly defined shapes needed for an effective embroidered insignia.

Design With a Purpose

This is one of those projects where the meaning behind the artwork matters more than decoration.

Technology may define the investigative environment, but protecting children is the purpose.

The lighthouse, its beam and the lone silhouette were designed to keep that purpose at the center of the patch.
