From the Design Desk: Houston HSTF Fugitive Investigative Strike Team
Sometimes the most effective insignia designs are the ones that don't need much explaining.
Our latest project from the Huntzman Design Desk was created for the Homeland Security Task Force in Houston and its Fugitive Investigative Strike Team.
And when your unit acronym spells FIST, the centerpiece of the design pretty much chooses itself.
FIST — Fugitive Investigative Strike Team
The central element is a clenched fist, rendered in subdued gray against a black background.
Across the knuckles are four simple letters: F I S T
Surrounding the design are the unit identifiers HSTF H-TOWN and FUGITIVE INVESTIGATIVE STRIKE TEAM, along with two understated Houston-inspired star elements.
Rather than adding unnecessary imagery, the concept was intentionally kept straightforward. The fist provides a strong visual identity for the team while simultaneously incorporating its acronym.
It's one of those designs where the image and the unit name work together immediately.
Built Around a Subdued Palette
For this project, we stayed almost entirely within a tactical palette of black, charcoal gray and olive drab.
That limited color scheme was deliberate.
The gray fist provides enough contrast to dominate the center without becoming overly bright, while the olive lettering, borders and accents remain clearly visible against the black background.
The result is a patch with a subdued appearance that still retains excellent definition.
Designed for PVC
The finished patch measures 3 inches in diameter and is produced in PVC with a Velcro backing.
PVC was particularly well suited to this design because the material allows the individual elements to be created with clean, raised and recessed surfaces. Details such as the contours of the hand, lettering and concentric borders remain sharply defined while maintaining the flat, subdued color palette of the original concept.
And at only three inches, keeping those elements bold and uncluttered becomes especially important.
A Multi-Agency Mission
The broader Homeland Security Task Force model is built around interagency cooperation, bringing together federal, state and local law-enforcement resources to address complex criminal organizations and investigations that often cross traditional jurisdictional lines.
The partnership includes personnel and resources from agencies such as the DEA, ATF, U.S. Marshals Service, IRS Criminal Investigation, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, working alongside state and local law enforcement.
That combined expertise supports investigations involving serious criminal activity, including drug trafficking, human smuggling, illegal weapons trafficking, money laundering and other financial crimes, extortion, and child exploitation. DHS materials likewise describe HSI investigative responsibilities spanning areas such as narcotics, human smuggling, money laundering, weapons smuggling and child exploitation. Sometimes Simple Hits Harder
There can be a temptation when designing custom insignia to keep adding elements simply because there's empty space available.
This project demonstrates why that's not always necessary.
Behind that simple clenched-fist design is a much larger idea: multiple agencies and disciplines working together toward a common mission.
One fist. Four letters. One team. FIST.
Another custom project completed by Huntzman Enterprises for the Homeland Security Task Force in Houston—and another example of how a relatively simple concept can represent a considerably larger mission.
