Throwback Thursday: NYPD Intelligence & Counterterrorism Challenge Coins
From the Huntzman Archives — Honoring the Leadership of NYPD Intelligence and Counterterrorism.
We decided to do a little #ThrowbackThursday post, so we're reaching into the Huntzman Enterprises archives to showcase two custom challenge coins produced for members of the NYPD's Intelligence and Counterterrorism leadership.
Throughout our history, Huntzman Enterprises has had the privilege of producing custom insignia for numerous specialized commands within the New York City Police Department. These two projects represent the tradition, professionalism, and pride associated with one of the Department's most critical missions.
Deputy Commissioner Rebecca Weiner — Intelligence & Counterterrorism
The first coin, measuring 2 inches in diameter, was produced for Rebecca Weiner, Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism.
The obverse prominently features the Deputy Commissioner's distinctive three-star shield, rendered in gold against a black background. The surrounding lettering identifies Deputy Commissioner Weiner, creating a design that reflects both the authority and responsibilities of her position.
The reverse highlights the NYPD Intelligence & Counterterrorism Bureau, incorporating a striking eagle with outstretched wings, a globe, the American flag, and the New York City skyline. Together, these elements symbolize the Department's commitment to protecting New York City against threats both domestic and international.
Deputy Chief Fernando P. Guimaraes — Intelligence Division
Our second featured coin was produced for Deputy Chief Fernando P. Guimaraes, Commanding Officer of the NYPD Intelligence Division.
Measuring 2.5 inches in diameter, this coin features an impressive gold-and-blue design.
The obverse showcases a prominent raised five-pointed gold star, surrounded by the names of the Intelligence Division's specialized commands, including IOAS, MSS, CIS, and PSS. The Deputy Chief's name and title complete the presentation, with a distinctive rope-style outer border adding another dimension to the design.
The reverse features the NYPD Intelligence Division designation surrounding a beautifully detailed eagle, American flags, and the NYPD shield. The combination of patriotic symbolism and traditional law enforcement imagery creates a fitting tribute to the Division's mission.
More Than Just a Challenge Coin
While challenge coins have become highly collectible within the law enforcement community, their significance extends far beyond their appearance.
They represent service, achievement, camaraderie, and the shared identity of the men and women who serve within these specialized commands.
For Huntzman Enterprises, projects like these are especially meaningful. As a law enforcement-owned business established in 2002, we understand the importance of creating insignia that accurately reflects the traditions and history of the organizations they represent.
More than two decades later, that commitment remains unchanged.
